Step by step guide to get Google Ads certification

In a world where so many people offer services like SEO and Google Ads, it’s important that you stand out and learn as much as possible.

Veterans and new professionals can benefit from a Google Ads certification.

As an industry standard with content directly linked to the Google Ads platform, it is the industry’s most trusted certification and training source.


What is a Google Ads Certification?

Google Ads certification is a process by which Google identifies marketers as experts in online advertising.

After passing the ads certification exams, individuals get a custom certification, and if they are affiliated with a company, they can contribute their Google partner credentials to the company.

Like many Google products, properties, and initiatives, the software has evolved over the years.

The certification program was self-contained and had a cost associated with taking the exams.

This has changed with the creation of the Google Partner Program and has evolved further with the move to Google Advertising Academy in 2018, and more recently the rebranding to “Academy”.

The Single Certification still works the same way it has in the past few years with training and exam content.

Over the years, certification has become a minimum or expected requirement for entry-level search marketing roles for agencies and businesses.

Even when I hire someone who will follow up on our training program, I know that they are willing to invest the time and that the importance of taking the accreditation step is paramount.

Getting this basic level of visibility around Google is more specific than a textbook on how Google ads work can provide.

Furthermore, it is helpful to be able to join someone who is already approved through my agency’s Google Partner account.

This step-by-step guide provides a step-by-step explanation of how to obtain advertising accreditation, as it can be a confusing process when you first do it or only come back every year or sometimes for re-accreditation.

Step 1: Getting Started with “Academy”

Access the Google Ads Certification Platform in the Skills Store.

In the upper right corner, click “Connect”.

We are now at an immediate critical stage. We want to make sure that the account you’re getting certified with is the one you want to authenticate with.

If you work for an agency or company, you will probably need to use your own work email address.

Regardless of the agency, business, or other status, you’ll probably want to associate your certificate with the address you manage in Google Ads to keep things simple and clean.

If you haven’t managed Google Ads yet and don’t have an account, you can easily create a new one here to get started.

If you’re a frequent user, make sure you find your “Academy” profile and make sure your Google account is still properly linked, so you don’t accidentally run tests in a new account instead of re-certifying your existing account.

Account management can be confusing and frustrating because there are separate profiles but accounts linked between this system and Google ad management accounts and systems.

If you want your certificate to be considered for a Google Partner badge, make sure you use your company email address that you use to manage ads for your Google partner company to properly associate things with.

Step 2: Choose your exam

If necessary, navigate back through “Academy” to “Google Ads Certifications” to get to the page containing the list of test subjects.

Here you can find the specific certificate you want to start with and click on it.

In the specific certificate, read the general information.

When you’re ready to dive in, click the “Start” button.

Step Three: Prepare for Exams

Google provides both basic educational information and more comprehensive training content.

Specific Google Ads certifications include:

  • Search.
  • pointing to.
  • Weigh.
  • video.
  • Shopping ads.
  • apps.
  • Creative ads.

If you are new to ads and certification exams, I recommend you start with the Google Search Ads certification.

Search ads are usually the most common type of ads a business will display.

But if you focus more on something like shopping, start there.

Training content is linked to each of these specific certifications.

When you click on one of them, you will be presented with options to get started, including a quick assessment of knowledge and other sources.

You will need to plan to invest at least a few hours to browse the training content specialty.

If you are running ad campaigns or have more viewers, it is always a good idea to review units, even if you do it faster.

The model questions are very helpful; They are written in the same format as they appear in the actual reviews.

Unless you are already certified and/or have a moderate level of advertising experience, don’t skip training content!

Step 4: Pass the assessment

To obtain certification, you must pass an assessment in one of the relevant certification disciplines.

Your certification will then be awarded to that specific area of ​​interest in the product.

You can discontinue one major or continue with additional majors until you have mastered and achieved all of the qualifications you desire.

If you excel or love standardized tests, nothing says you can’t pass them all.

Note that if you do not pass the test, there is a waiting period before you can try again. This is the only real punishment for not being successful.

When you pass one or more assessments, I recommend that you download and save the digital certificate(s), in order to get proof of your certification.

Also, you can create a public profile page that shows your competence.

You can activate the public profile (if you have not already done so) by clicking in the upper right corner of the page, then on “My Account”. You will find a toggle for “General” to enable if you wish by following the prompts.


The Google Ads certification provides essential credentials for new professionals running ads.

It also provides an ongoing opportunity for industry veterans to maintain their status and demonstrate longevity by maintaining certification and staying current as the platform and best practices change over time.

Whether you’re looking for your first field job outside of school or are taking advantage of certification to recruit Google Partners, I recommend and maintain the Standard Learning and Qualifications Program.

There are other excellent training and educational programs available from third parties.

However, Google Ads certification still carries weight in the industry and is a common expectation for paid search practitioners.
