Civil technology. The African Union is offering scholarships to citizens of 7 countries including Morocco

Apply to the African Union (AU) Civil Technology Fund for Innovative Civil Technology Initiatives. In fact, the African Union offers a skills building program for civil tech professionals in 7 African countries, including Morocco.

Once again this year, the African Union is looking for innovative initiatives that use civic technology and digital participation to facilitate inclusive public decision-making and enhance democratic governance across Africa. Its ambition: to improve citizen participation through technology. For this purpose, the African Union Civil Technology Fund (AUCTF), a German cooperation funded project that promotes the use of civil technology to amplify citizens’ voices, has opened the door for applications for a scholarship program targeting civil technology professionals in Africa for a minimum period of 3 months. Nationals and nationals of 7 African countries are eligible. Besides Morocco, the other countries are Mali, Nigeria, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Uganda and Kenya.

In addition to citizenship requirements to be eligible, applicants must work to enhance citizen engagement through innovative use of data and digital technologies. They are also required to have a minimum of three years’ experience in civil technology, an understanding of the role of civil society and proficiency in the English language. Knowledge of the French language is an asset. The program is an internship and training opportunity for fellows.

Successful applicants will receive grants of between 10,000 and 32,000 euros each to start or develop their projects. These grants can be used to develop a new project or to expand or adapt an ongoing initiative.

The Civic Tech Fund is not limited to financial support, but offers a capacity support program that will be designed and adapted to the specific needs of the selected initiatives. Support can include help from experienced technologists and data scientists, operational mentoring, mentoring, and workshop sessions.

Hence, successful candidates will receive skills in the areas of cyber security, digital marketing, and web development. They will work with partner organizations. They will help a wide range of actors scale up their civic technology initiatives that amplify the voice of citizens or help hold governments to account.
