The professional workforce looks very different than it did at the start of 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced traditional companies to move their operations online, making some jobs obsolete or in dire need of an overhaul. In fact, 77% of workers are willing to learn new skills or retrain entirely, according to the 2021 PwC Report on Hopes and Fears about upskilling.

As the pandemic has changed the way we do business, companies have found new ways to do business. “We can attribute a great deal of the country’s economic resilience over the past two years to the hard work and resilience of American companies — and the digital tools that have helped them,” said Lisa Gevelber, founder of Growing Up with GoogleDit. luck. We want to continue this momentum. »

To help companies of all sizes retrain and develop their existing employees, Google announced on May 2 that all US companies are eligible to receive up to 500 free Google Career Certification Scholarships, worth $100,000 per company.

“It’s no secret that companies of all sizes struggle to recruit and retain talent with core skills,” Gevelber says.. “Google is excited about how this particular offering will help small businesses that may not have skills development programs for their employees and is keen to find talent with digital skills.”

Adds training to Google’s certification program

This new training program is in addition to the Google program. A $100 million fund gives access to Google Career certifications to 20,000 people, CEO Sundar Pichai and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo announced in February. This program also provides professional training, interview preparation and placement services, and living allowances.

Certifications available under the new Grow with Google program include IT support, data analytics, and project management. This week Google also announced the launch of a Digital Marketing and E-Commerce Certification, which will train workers to find customers online, sell products or services, and perform marketing and measurement analytics.

“The world is rapidly becoming an increasingly visible place, and digital and visual communication will be essential skills for nearly any profession,” Amy Schultz, Canva’s Global Head of Talent Acquisition, said in a press release announcing the program. “We look forward to working with Google to empower people in the skills-based job market.”

How to apply for the program and what it looks like

About 75% of small and medium-sized businesses said they have adopted digital tools during the pandemic, according to Gevelber, but the new Grow with Google program is available to US businesses of any size. “These digital skills can help companies continue to grow online, reach new customers and unlock new revenue streams while creating more opportunities for their employees.”

Any US-based company can apply for the program, and all eligible companies can receive up to 500 free scholarships, which are worth $100,000, according to Google. This estimates the value of each certificate at about $200. Certificates are offered through Coursera, an online education provider, and take approximately three to six months to complete. Students are not required to have a degree or experience in the field they are studying, according to Google.

The app asks basic questions about the company, including number of employees, industry, and contact information. Instead, Gevelber calls it a “simple verification process.”
